Last week, Theodore LaVigna Insurance made the move from North Main Street to South Central Avenue. The transition marks a new age for the venerable insurance firm.
“It’s a fresh start. It’s a more modern space, certainly,” said proprietor Bob “Berto” Ciulla. ”Someday these guys (his son’s Michael and Stephen) will takeover, so having a more modern space is what we wanted.”
“It was just time for a change,” said Michael Ciulla, Bob’s son and fellow agent at the firm.
The new location is on 201 South Central Avenue across from Bubble’s Restaurant. It was formerly the Ellsworth VFW Post 6328. Since the property was purchased last year, a retaining wall was constructed to expand parking and aesthetics for the new tenant.
The Ciullas were unaware of what may fill their vacancy in the North Main Street building. Ciulla said that the space wasn’t much bigger than the space on North Main Street, but that there was not a need for more square footage.
“You talk about communications and technology, you just don’t need all the space you used to,” Bob Ciulla said. “These files here we keep stored [in hard copy] as required by law, but everything else we can put on the computers.”
The Ciullas said that the move was made simply for a change of scenery. Added visibility on NYS Routes 4 and 32 was an added bonus.
“When you’re coming out of town, the corner of this building is right in your vision and the same coming northbound,” Bob Ciulla said.
While LaVigna Insurance opened the new location last weekend, the agency plans to have an official kick-off event in the springtime after the exterior work can be completed.
“We plan to have an event sometime this spring when the weather warms up and the exterior work can be completed,” Michael Ciulla said. “Whether it’s an open house or a cook-out on a Saturday, I don’t know yet.”
Theodore LaVigna Agency has been in business since 1949. Bob Ciulla has been sole proprietor since 2000-2001 and his sons have joined the agency in recent years.
