Crews to Break Ground on South Street Hill

A groundbreaking ceremony at 1 pm tomorrow will signify the official start of the South Street Hill renovation project, although construction has been underway since Aug. 6. The road will be re-opened by Oct. 30, according to Mayor Anthony Sylvester.

By August 16th, trees have been removed on both sides of South Street. New utility poles have been installed on the cemetery side as well.

The South Street Hill is a major artery connecting the city of Mechanicville with the Mechanicville Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. While construction is underway, school buses will be routed through a detour that was determined by the Department of Transportation (see map).

“It’s about a 10-minute difference,” said Sylvester. “It’s not going to be a big inconvenience.”

The city, in cooperation with the schools, had explored alternative, possibly faster routes, he said, but the DOT route was the safest.

The project will revamp the roadway, stabilize the slope, and add a wider sidewalk on the park side of the street to better accommodate– and attract– heavier pedestrian traffic in the future (see concept art, below).

The new South Street Hill will feature a wide, inviting sidewalk with views of the park and city. Concept art provided by Barton & Loguidice.
