POLL: Where do you commute?

Where does your daily commute from Mechanicville take you?

For most folks, Mechanicville is a bedroom town, meaning that most residents of Mechanicville live there but work elsewhere. Albany and Schenectady Counties have traditionally been the major employers for the Capital Region, at least since the mid-20th Century.

Albany County is very stable in terms of overall employment thanks to NYS government offices in addition to SUNY Albany. Schenectady County is still home to General Electric with campuses in Schenectady and Niskayuna.

Rensselaer County is just across the bridge and a resurgent city of Troy just 20 minutes down the river. The higher education and service industry sectors of Troy have increased employment in Rensselaer County in recent years.

Mechanicville was once the hub of industry in Saratoga County when the railroads and paper mills ruled the day. Today, Saratoga County is growing in terms of employment with Global Foundries in Malta, Momentive in Waterford, and the booming economy of Saratoga Springs.
